Around the palazzo

Ten minutes on foot, all around us

Palazzo Miracoli sits in eastern Cannaregio, where Venice is still lived in: between the Rialto Bridge and the northern lagoon, ten minutes from Piazza San Marco and yet away from its crowds. A short guide to what lies within an easy walk of our door.

Across the canal

Santa Maria dei Miracoli

The church facing our windows, built by Pietro Lombardo between 1481 and 1489 to house an image of the Virgin held to be miraculous. Clad inside and out in coloured marble, it is one of the jewels of the early Venetian Renaissance — and the church Venetians choose for their weddings.

A few minutes away

Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo

One of the grandest squares in Venice: the Gothic basilica where many doges are buried, Verrocchio’s equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, and the marble façade of the Scuola Grande di San Marco — the confraternity that, from 1423, looked after the houses of our palazzo.

Corte del Milion

By the Teatro Malibran, the courtyards named after Marco Polo’s book, Il Milione: the Polo family house stood here. A Byzantine arch still survives.

The Rialto Bridge and market

Four minutes on foot. Go early for the market: the Erbaria for fruit and vegetables, the Pescheria for the fish of the lagoon (closed on Sundays and Mondays).

Ca’ d’Oro

The most celebrated Gothic palace on the Grand Canal, today the Galleria Franchetti, home to Mantegna’s Saint Sebastian.

Towards the lagoon

Fondamente Nove

Five minutes away, the long quay on the northern lagoon. The view opens onto the cemetery island of San Michele, and boats leave from here for Murano, Burano and Torcello.

I Gesuiti

The church of Santa Maria Assunta, its walls inlaid with green and white marble like damask, with Titian’s Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.

A longer walk

Piazza San Marco

About ten minutes on foot, through the Mercerie.

Strada Nova and the Ghetto

The busy main street of Cannaregio leads west towards the Ghetto — the first in the world to bear that name — and the quiet fondamente of the Ormesini and the Misericordia, lined with bacari.
