The neighbourhood

Cannaregio, the Venice of the Venetians

Cannaregio is the most lived-in of the six sestieri of Venice: long fondamente along the canals, small campi with a well at their centre, neighbourhood shops and bacari where Venetians actually eat. Palazzo Miracoli stands in its eastern corner, between the Rialto Bridge and the northern lagoon — in the city, yet away from its crowds.

Why stay in Cannaregio

Quiet, and close to everything

The Rialto Bridge is four minutes on foot, Piazza San Marco about ten. Yet in the evening, on our canal, the only sounds are church bells and water against stone.

A Venice still lived in

Here children walk to school across the bridges, and the greengrocer knows your name by the third morning. Staying in Cannaregio means living, for a few days, the everyday life of the city.

The lagoon at the door

Fondamente Nove, five minutes away, looks out over the northern lagoon: from here the boats leave for Murano, Burano and Torcello, and the Alilaguna from the airport stops here too.

A quiet canal

The Rio dei Miracoli is one of Venice’s “blue” canals: only gondolas and residents’ boats may pass.

A little history

The name

Cannaregio may take its name from the reeds — canne — that once grew here, or from the Canal Regio, the “royal canal” that is today the Canale di Cannaregio. Venetians still argue about it.

The Ghetto

In 1516 the Republic confined the Jewish community to the area of the old foundry — the getto — giving the world a word. Its synagogues and its tall houses are among the most moving places in Venice.

Tintoretto and Titian

Tintoretto lived on the Fondamenta dei Mori and is buried in the church of the Madonna dell’Orto, among his own paintings. At the Gesuiti hangs Titian’s Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence.

Marco Polo

The house of the Polo family stood in the courtyards behind the Teatro Malibran, a few minutes from the palazzo — still called the Corte del Milion, after his book.

Cannaregio, day by day

In the morning

A coffee in Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the market at Rialto, the light of the water moving across the ceiling beams.

In the afternoon

The Ca’ d’Oro, the Miracoli, the Gesuiti; a walk to the Madonna dell’Orto along canals where you will meet few other visitors.

In the evening

An ombra on the Fondamenta della Misericordia or the Ormesini, then dinner in a trattoria booked by us. See where we send our guests.

For whom

Couples

First time in Venice or the twentieth: a quiet house to come back to in the evening, with the Miracoli in the window.

Families

More space than a hotel room, a kitchen, a neighbourhood that is easy with children — and Rialto a few minutes away.

Those who return

Guests who know Venice and want, this time, to live it from the inside.
